Idea Challenger Series

What happens to a technology artifact after it is adopted? It has to evolve within its particular context to be effective; otherwise, it will become part of the detritus of change
The transformation of a simple wooden wheel by a series of modifications led to a whole new felid of research resulting in the evolution of the bullock cart wheels to the modern day, super fast cars! Small technological modifications like these are transforming the way we live.
Recently a chopper company made it big by some slight modification in making of helicopters by two main rotors spinning in opposite directions and an airplane-like propeller at the rear and crossing all the speed barriers that world has for them.
Problem statement:
The arena to test your innovation, vision and application is here. All you got to do is to present an idea through a presentation, paper or model which shows how the efficiency of some existing system can be increased with some minor modifications.
We are looking at innovation, rather than invention. The idea need not be a complicated new design, the objective is to find a way which increases the efficiency by twisting the system just a little bit. So put your thinking caps on to increase the efficiency of any of the following systems:
- Electric sources of light
- Solar Thermal engine/generator
- Green Buildings
- Sustainable Transportation
- Rain water control and collection system.
- Drinking water technology
- Battery powered systems
- Fuel derived from wastes
- Hybrid vehicles and fuels
- Fuel treatment for cleaner air
- Solar cells
- Wind and geothermal energy
- Bio fuels
- Multipurpose examining medical tools.
Event format:
The event will be held in two stages:
Preliminary Round:
Participants should send a brief abstract of their write up on their ideas before 27th February
Final Round:
Teams will be shortlisted based on their report. The shortlisted teams will have to make a ten minute presentation of their Presentation during Aarohan.
Evaluation criteria:
The write-ups will be shortlisted based on the following
-
Innovation and originality of ideas.
-
Feasibility of the proposed modification in both technical and economic way.
-
Technical understanding.
-
Market sustainability of the modified product; whether it will be able to sustain the competition from other similar products. Thus it is imperative to show how the product can be marketed in an efficient manner.
-
Cost index.
Rules and regulations:
- This event is open to students of all colleges in India.
- A maximum of three participants per team is allowed.
- The last date for submission of the write up is 27th February 2010.
- Copying from the internet or other sources, or any indication of it not being original will lead to immediate disqualification.
- The decision of the judges will be final and binding.
PS: No restrictions on use of basic engineering software.
All certificates will be IEEE recognised
Eminent personalities from companies and researchers working in this field will be invited to judge the event. Thus the participants will have the unique opportunity and priceless exposure to showcase their mettle.
Thus it also is a very real possibility that the idea may actually be adapted by some company and brought in the market.
So grab this opportunity with both hands and strive to think out of the box.... daring and an open mind is all that’s needed!!
