Transporter
Introduction:
The invention of the wheel marked a major milestone in the history of human civilisation. The wheel provided an unforeseen impetus in the development of ancient civilisation. From then on, there has been no looking back, from steam engines to bullet trains, from Mach 3's to space missions; there is no place where there is a dearth of speed!
As in civilisation, so in industry, transport is a very crucial aspect. Just manufacturing the goods ain't enough...their quick transport is important. We as budding engineers are fully aware of this. This March, come test your logistics skills...
Problem statement:
Build a bot which has to collect as many balls as possible in the given time, the sooner the better. The balls have to be picked from the centre of the arena and placed in the drop zone. The path in which the bot has to move consists of pebbles, rolling rods, sticky, oily, water film, barricades any many other barriers.
Arena specifications:
- There are three zones in the arena, namely A, B and C.
- Zone A (radius > 2m) has the balls to be carried away, zone C comprises of the intermediate path to move on and the balls are to be finally placed in Zone B.
- A ditch of depth 20cm and width 15cm is present between Zone A and Zone C. The bot may use any possible mechanism to cross the ditch and retrieve the balls.
- Zone B is present behind a barricade, which is 10cm in height. Hence, the bots are expected to lift the ball and place/throw in zone B.
- Zone C consist of a random path to be followed by the bot. The path may have any sort of un-even surfaces viz. pebbles, rollers, oily or sticky or wet film etc., or even barricades!!!
- Each path in zone C has various levels of difficulty.
- Basic table-tennis plastic balls and Marble balls comprise the goods to be transported.
Bot specifications:
- The bot should fit within a box of 30cm X 30cm X 30cm.
- The power supply used for individual bot should not exceed 20V.
- Bots are expected to lift the ball and place them in zone B, off the barricade.
- No lego kits or any other readily available kits are allowed in this event.
- Bots can be wired or wireless.
- The bot at any cost should not damage the arena or the surroundings. No chemical or IC engine powers are entertained.
- The bot may be allowed to expand during its performance unless it does not interrupt other bots on the arena!
- In case the bot has to build a bridge over the ditch, it will have to carry all the materials all by itself and none will be provided by the organisers as a part of the arena.
- Open for all years and participants must show proper ID cards of their institutions.
- A team should comprise of not more than 4 members.
- The teams will be informed well in advance about the timings of their runs and each team is supposed to be ready with their machines near the board 15 minutes before their run, failing which the team will be disqualified.
- Each team will be initially given 2 minutes of trial for some final adjustments in their machine. After this the game will start irrespective of whether a team is ready or not.
- At the beginning of the game, the team has to place their machine at the starting point. The game coordinator will inform when to start the machine.
- In case of any dispute judges’ decision will be final and binding. The judges also hold the right to disqualify any team in case any of the rules are violated.
- The organizers reserve all rights to change any of the above stated rules as they deem fit.
Note:-
Further rules may be updated if coordinators consider it as necessary. So keep checking the rules.
Event Rules:
- All the teams are divided randomly into two sub-groups namely A and B. One team from each group shall participate at a time in the event. The rounds will be played one-on-one.
- A team can build a maximum of 3 bots if required, though only one bot alone can do the job. However, at a given time only one bot of a team will be allowed in Zone A.
- In Zone B and Zone C, the teams must remain in their respective regions and shall not be allowed to enter the opponents region. However, there would be no such defined regions in Zone A.
- Both TT balls as well as marbles shall be used. Extra points will be credited if one goes for the marbles!
- There are different paths in zone C with different difficulty. Hence, extra points will be given to the bot if they risk, opting a more challenging path. Paths are disclosed at the start of event.
- Bots are allowed to drop the ball not more than three times during the event. Any further dropping shall lead to disqualification!
- Bots are allowed to take only one ball at a time from zone A. Task of this event is to place maximum number of balls in zone B with in least time. Timer is set ON as the bot starts from its position.
- There are few check points on the path of zone C. If at any time, a bot happens to get stuck at any surface, it shall be placed at previous check point, while the timer still goes on.
- Only a limited time is given for the bot to complete its task, any further time for completion is not entertained; it will lead to deduction of points.
- Further rules shall be updated here or told during the start of the event only if coordinators consider them as necessary.
