Dig the Change

In the fast paced world of industrial technology the process of transporting material within a manufacturing unit is of enormous importance .The entire process involves complex technology Which is inevitable accompanied by the generation of the error .

The event “Dig the change” is based on the lines of this very same background. Error need to be detected and removed or minimize as much as possible. The following example would make the scene more vivid: Say a carton needs to be transported in a processing unit. A situation may arise where few cartons come out to be defective .They need to be identified and removed. Special recognition from IEEE is what makes it all the more special.

1st round (Prelims):
Three cubical block would be send together as one single package one after another. These three blocks would constitute a packet i.e. packets would be sent over the conveyor belt one after another .The teams are to count the number of the packets and has to display in 7-segment display or LCD.

Teams which are able to detect more than 50% of the packet out of the packet provided, qualify for the 2nd round.

2nd round :
Here the team is to detect the faulty packet i.e. those packets would contain less than 3 cubical blocks and even team has count number of the packet. Team has to display both how many faulty packets are there and they have to count total number of packets in 7-segment display or LCD.

Evaluation criteria for 2nd round:

  •   10 points for detecting each error
  •   - 5points for not detecting each error
  •   + 5points for detecting each packet.

Team having more points can qualify.

3rd  Round :
In this final round, the position team has count total number of the packet as well as detects the faulty packet and when operation of sending packets is completed team has to display the position of the faulty packet.

For example say the 1st four packets contain 3 cubical blocks each and in the 5th position, there is only two blocks. Thus, the position of the faulty packets becomes 5 and so on.

Evaluation criteria for 3rd round:

  • 20 points for displaying position of the each faulty packets
  • +10 points for detecting each error
  • -5 points for not detecting each error
  • +5 points for detecting each packet.

Rules and regulations:

  1. Each team should have member equal to or less than 4 person.
  2. Cubical block dimension is 6cmX 6cm X 6cm
  3. The conveyor belt will be provided by us and speed of conveyor may vary .
  4. The number of packets to count is in 2 digit i.e. number of packets is less than 99.
  5. The number of faulty packet is less than 9 that is it is in one digit number.
  6. Any type of sensor(optical, proximity) can be used however the sensors must have a clearance of atleast 1 cm from the packets.
  7. The minimum time gap between the occurance of two packets is 0.5 sec at any speed of the belt.
  8. The sensors can be placed on either one or both sides of the belt.
  9. Platforms would be provided for the sensors to be placed by the belt.
  10. The speed of the belt may also vary so the sensors need to be built accordingly.
