IDP

This is an opportunity for all you freaky engineers to showcase your talent, and to see their creative work.

Creation at a level managed by real world technocrats is what belies this amazing event. We give you Real World on-site problems,You give us solutions.  That’s the deal!!!
So people, gear up to face something you never have and you’ll be surprised with the result.

OVERVIEW:

Biology has broken it's leashes, and is accelerating in the twenty first century with it's plethora of modern technologies. From proteomics, genomics to computational biology, the basis lie in understanding protein mechanisms present in organisms.

As biologists strive to make the world greener with their innate knowledge of functioning of the biological systems, at the heart of majority of biological problems lies gel based protein separation processes. It's time for GenX's budding engineers to design a competent system to automate the 2D gel casting process and deliver to biologists a competent tool to efficiently and automatically conduct their daily gel electrophoresis jobs.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

The problem involves designing an automatic gel docking system.

The system should have following functionality one or more.

  1. Gel caster - Cast a gel medium – Design a mechanical control system, better than the current market alternative.
  2. Substrate loader - Load substrate in the gel.
  3. Automatic gel system.
  4. Gel extractor - Modified gel picked for scanning and extraction of proteins from gels.

Note: Pneumatic systems for doing such registered are already registered under US patents. We look for innovative solution that can revolutionize gel docking systems all together making it faster, automatic and convenient. User can design the whole system or part. Participants are also free to practically design one of the given components viz. Substrate loader and suggest theoretical designs for other components.

OUTCOME OF THE DESIGN :

  • Will empower biology labs to do things more efficiently.
  • Save time, automate gel casting, selection and picking process.
  • Empower biologists to run standard protocols without even bothering about the system specifications.

JUDGING CRITERIA:

The entries will be judged solely on their innovation quotient although practical working model will have weight edge over non working counterparts.

What we are looking forward to is small but powerful amendments over current designs, and patentable ideas among young engineers and scientists.

Winners will get suitable engineering and image processing support teams to design the final project and go for a patent.
So keep innovating!!

COMPANY POWERED PROSPECTS:

  • Everyone is a winner.
  • Based on submitted work and level of contribution, we will sponsor a team to design one such system and test this in IISC Bangalore laboratory.
  • All members in the team will get certificates from "thinkbiosoln" and IISC Bangalore research labs.
  • Innovative ideas will be patented in the users name and marketed for him.
  • Innovators are fully eligible to draw honorarium in case of possible marketing of the project.
